iPad 1 VS iPad2

Sejujurnya tak banyak hal mengejutkan dari apa yang dirilis oleh Apple akan generasi kedua iPad-nya. Namun, harus diakui bahwa dalam kurun satu tahun lebih usia iPad 1 memang tak bisa disaingi oleh produk kategori sejenisnya. Keandalannya pada teknologi layar yang impresif adalah kekuatan produk ini. Meski demikian, toh Apple tak tinggal diam, paling tidak penambahan sensor three-axis gyro akan menambah marak penggunaan berbagai aplikasi kelak. Walaupun sejujurnya, sensor ini sudah banyak digunakan oleh perangkat Android. 

Meskipun dimensi iPad 1 sudah paling pas untuk ditenteng, pemikiran untuk mengurangi faktor ketebalan jadi agenda utama Apple sebelum merilis generasi kedua ini. Hasilnya memang sangat signifikan, berkurang hampir 5 mm sudah sangat bagus. Sekaligus meneguhkan sebagai perangkat tablet paling tipis. Sebagai perbandingan Dell Streak masih di bilangan 10 mm. Tidak mudah memangkas menjadi 8,8 mm, sebab pastilah akan berkenaan dengan penggunaan berbagai chip.

Dua hal lain yang memberikan perbedaan signifikan adalah prosesor dan penggunaan kamera. Dengan dual core, harapannya akan mampu meningkatkan kinerja. Ini sejalan dengan pengenalan OS versi baru yang telah diumumkan berbarengan perilisan iPad 2. Faktor kamera ditujukan sebenarnya bukan buat pemotretan, tetapi untuk mewadahi kepentingan penggunaan fitur FaceTime.

Aplikasi satu ini menggunakan video dengan codec H-264 atau AAC. Sementara protokol sinyalnya memakai VoIP. Jadi FaceTime berbeda dengan video call biasa yang menggunakan jaringan 3G GSM. Biayanya tentulah cukup mahal. Sementara FaceTime memakai basis internet.

iPad 2 yang akan hadir di pasar pada 11 Maret nanti, justru banyak mengadopsi fasilitas pada iPhone 4. Dengan kata lain, seperti memindahkan ponsel ke tablet. iPad 2 dijual seharga 500 sampai 630 dollar. Harga yang sama dengan iPad 1. Cover Ipad 2

Just like it did with the iPhone 4, Apple have introduced their own cover for the iPad 2, and they’ve called it the Smart Cover.  Like the Bumper for the iPhone 4, it doesn’t offer incredible all-encompassing protection, but it does protect the screen along with adding a splash of color.

If you’ve seen the pictures, or have already watched the video below, then you may be wondering where you’ve seen that design before.  We’ll tell you, it’s very similar to Speck’s latestCandyShell iPad case, which also uses a folding screen cover that becomes a stand.  Apple’s Smart Cover has four folding sections and uses magnets to attach itself to the side of your iPad 2.  Then, like a book, you fold that cover to the side to form a triangular stand.

The Smart Cover will support the iPad 2 in either landscape mode or at a steep angle suitable for typing, but not in portrait.  Interestingly, the official Smart Cover page says Apple designed the iPad 2 around the cover, rather than the other way around, so you’ve got magnets inside the frame of the tablet to ensure a really secure fit.  We imagine third-party manufacturers will be making use of those magnets too.

With the cover in place, another magnet holds it tight and even puts the iPad 2 to sleep when it clicks closed, then wakes it again when you take it off.  The underside of that colorful top is made from microfiber, so it’ll keep the screen clean too.

There are two different covers in a variety of colors, with one made from polyurethane and the other from leather, and they’re priced at $39 and $69 respectively.  They should be available on the same day the iPad 2 is released.

New Ipad 2

The iPad 2 event was like a whirlwind, with information on the new tablet coming thick and fast, so here is the specification list as we know it.  We’ll save you a bit of time if you’re looking for how much RAM the iPad 2 has, or what the megapixel count is, as Apple haven’t released those details yet.  The teases!

As you’ll probably already know, the iPad 2 has had a redesign and the body is now just 8.8mm thin, that’s slimmer than the 9.3mm thin iPhone 4 and noticably thinner than the iPad, which measured 13mm.  The overall size of the tablet has seen a slight reduction in size too, by about 5mm all round.  The weight is the next thing to change, as the iPad 2 tips the scales at 601 grams, that’s 80 grams less than the Wi-Fi iPad, and that’s going to make a difference.

Nobody seriously expected a Retina Display on the iPad 2, and sure enough the screen’s size and resolution stays the same at 1024 x 768 and 9.7″.  The iPad 2’s battery will also return the same 10 hours usage and around a month of standby, and there will be a choice of either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB worth of storage.

So what has changed?  The processor has been upgraded from the A4 1Ghz chip to the A5 dual-core 1Ghz chip, which Apple say makes everything from web browsing and gaming to multi-tasking faster than the original.  The new chip also promises nine-times faster graphics performance too.

The iPad 2 also gains two cameras, one on the front and one on the rear.  The addition of these two lenses sees the introduction of FaceTime for the iPad, so you’ll be able to video-call anyone using another iPad 2, an iPhone 4 or a Mac with FaceTime installed.  The official spec page doesn’t provide their megapixel count, but does state the rear lens can shoot 720p video at 30fps and has a 5x zoom, while the front camera has VGA quality video at 30fps.  Both can take still pictures and will add geo-tagging information.

AirPrint and AirPlay are joined by video mirroring, which requires the purchase of an Apple Digital AV Adaptor cable that plugs into the 30-pin dock connector and provides an HDMI-out at the other end.  This way whatever is playing on your iPad can be streamed to your HD TV, and it even supports 1080p playback.  The cable will cost $39.

Finally, the iPad 2 has been given a gyroscope, so games using that feature on the iPhone 4 will now operate in the same way on the tablet.

The iPad 2 will be available in black or white from March 11th in the USA, or March 25th in 25 other countries, and the price remains the same.
